If hearing men call women “females” makes your head explode, you need this cute feminist shirt. Give misogynists a grammar lesson everywhere you go, the correct word to refer to a female adult human is woman. Featuring our original dictionary character illustration, this shirt lets everyone know that “female” is not a noun.
Why do women hate this grammar mistake so intensely? It's rarely a mistake, it's a subtle way of using language to dehumanize women by referring to us using a scientific term that reduces us to our anatomy. Female can refer to an animal, a plant, probably even a space alien, but it is an adjective and not a word you can use to replace a noun like girl or woman depending on the age of the female human you are referring to. If you're guilty of this grammar mistake, here's your sign to stop calling women females.
When I decided to create this design I asked other women around our office how they feel about being called “females,” and every woman's face immediately turned to a scowl. “I am not a science specimen!” declared one woman. “We know when men say that what they really mean to call us is bitches, that is a fighting word. They just think they will get away with it because it's not a curse word. We know what they mean.” said another. Every woman I asked in my social and professional life reacted the same way, not a single one said they didn't mind it. If you're a man reading this and looking to argue the point, you're already making the point for us by not listening to us when we say don't do it. Just take our word for it, female is not a noun.
