Hell-bent for laughter!

March 28, 2019

Boredwalk Hell-Bent Feminist She-Devil Shirt

Phew! Another week in the books. One week closer to our respective inevitable demises. Thank goodness, amirite you guys?

This week was pretty hectic around Boredwalk HQ thanks to some epic fails on the part of one of our main suppliers. Silver lining? We documented their ineptitude on Twitter.

That didn't stop us from delivering the goods, though! I still made time to crank out not just one, but TWO new designs: the refreshingly feminist counterbalance to Netflix's new Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt you see above, and the delightfully glum paean to springtime blues below:

Boredwalk Welcome To The Misery Party Shirt

Meredith and I also squeezed in a fun interview with *EMMY NOMINATED* comedy writer Chase Mitchell! You may know his writing from any one of the following esteemed programs: MTV's Nikki & Sarah Live, NBC's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, NBC's The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and Netflix's The Fix, among others. He's, uh, kind of a big deal...or at the very least big deal-adjacent.

We chat with Chase about how he got into comedy, first as a fan and then professionally, how comedy writing is a lot more like copy writing for marketing than comedy pros might care to admit, what exactly he did to get his Twitter account suspended for a day (hint: it involved the former Speaker for the U.S. House of Representatives, a necktie, and a humorous, not-at-all-literal suggestion of what the former Speaker should do with it), and how Disneyland broke him (in a good way), among many other topics! Listen below!

And hey, if you've been enjoying the podcast — or even if you haven't! — please consider taking some time out of your busy lives and subscribing to it on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play, or leaving us a review. Tell us what you like or don't like. Try to be constructive; we're fragile artistic types that already drink too much (thanks, internet trolls.) 😒

We hope you've had a fantastic week, and if you haven't, that your weekend at least provides some respite from the storminess of the previous five days. If you can, try to take a few minutes for yourself — you could probably use it.

We'll be back next week with a new Boredwalk community spotlight, new designs, a new podcast episode, and more! Until then, stay safe, love — or at least tolerate — your fellow human (even if he/she/they are being an asshole and definitely don't deserve it), and as always...

Peace, love, and tacos,

Matt

Boredwalk Community: Your Best is Good Enough and So Are You

March 25, 2019

Hell Is Other People Tee

Welcome to our weekly Boredwalk Community series, where we ask Boredwalk fans fun questions! This week we're talking to Connor F. of Philadelphia PA, looking sharp in a Hell Is Other People Tee.

1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?

Considering I had my last day of my part-time job *today*, I can answer this pretty easily. I’ve worked retail for the past ten years, but now that’s just part-time. My full-time job is my dream job; I’m a tour manager, merchandiser, and photographer for touring bands. I’m making my way around the country starting in just a few days! (Ed. note: Congrats, Connor! That's awesome! Also: earplugs are your friends. Future-Connor will appreciate you for using them.)

2. If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

I really think I’d like to be able to teleport. Having friends and family across the country and not being able to see them gets me down in the dumps sometimes, so I’d like to fix that.

3. You can curse a nemesis with a minor annoyance; what do you choose?

Hangnails. Eternal hangnails. Not too painful, but painful enough to be endlessly annoying.

4. What's a life pro tip the Boredwalk community needs to know?

Your best is good enough and so are you.

5. Clear up a misconception (about your job, where you are from, some other topic you know a lot about).

I’m from Philadelphia and a common misconception regarding this city is that everyone is mean. You have to do some digging, but there are plenty of diamonds in the rough!

Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?

You can follow me and my work on Instagram @cpfeimster and you can watch me complain on Twitter @cpfeimster!

Getting personal with comedian Darren Carter about the creative process, the sweet science, and sinister banjo music!

Boredwalk The Personal Is Political Shirt

Happy Spring, everybody!

It's been a bit of a frantic week here at Boredwalk HQ, but we're hoping we can catch our breath a little this weekend. If you've had a hectic few days yourself, here's hoping you can enjoy a breather, too. If you're just here for the podcast, scroll on down to the bottom! If you'd like to kill a little more time, read on...

As you can see above, I still had time to work on a new design inspired — both visually and thematically — by "the personal is political" slogan popularized by the second-wave feminist movement of the 1960s. It's pretty groovy, and very fitting as we continue celebrating Women's History Month!

I wish we had some rad historical tidbits to share from previous incarnations of March 22nd, but the "best" I could come up with was that on this day in 1972 the U.S. Senate passed the Equal Rights Amendment...which to this day has not been ratified.

I won't get into the particulars of the proposed amendment itself, but I did learn some pretty interesting things about its stalled ratification:

• 37 of the 50 states have ratified the amendment. To be enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, amendments must be ratified by 3/4 of the states. What is 3/4 of 50? 37.5. So close, right?! Not so fast...

• Two of those 37 states waited until after the March 22nd 1979 deadline to ratify it — Nevada in 2017, and Illinois in 2018. Even if a 38th state comes on board, you can bet there will be a legal fight over the validity of Nevada, Illinois, and #38 triggering Constitutional ratification.

• Legislation was enacted to extend the 1979 ratification deadline to June 30th 1982, but not all states recognized this extension, and some of the states that had previous ratified had done so with the understanding that if Constitutional ratification failed by the original deadline they would fall off the list of ratifying states (looking at you, South Dakota.)

• Four of the 35 states that ratified the amendment before the deadline passed legislation later on to rescind their ratification: Nebraska, Tennessee, Idaho, and Kentucky. There's debate as to whether that's something that has legal standing, but until a 38th state comes on board it's kind of moot. Speaking of potential 38's...

• Seven other states have passed legislation in one of their two houses ratifying the ERA, but not in both. Depending on your point of view, this is one of the problems with bi-cameral legislatures. To learn about how the other 1/50th lives, re-listen to our interview with Nebraska state senator Megan Hunt to hear all about Nebraska's uni-cameral legislature!

So even if a 38th state joins up and pushes the ERA over the 3/4 precipice, it may actually only be considered the 33rd if the (almost 100% guaranteed to happen) ensuing legal fight determines that Idaho, Kentucky, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Tennessee were all within their legal rights to rescind their initial ratifications.

Legislation is weird, wild stuff!

Moving on, in this week's podcast we chat with comedian Darren Carter! We talk to Darren about his career in comedy, his creative process, how he's using his YouTube channel and his own Pocket Party podcast to reach new fans, how the time of day can really make certain musical instruments sound terrifying, and he and Meredith geek out about their mutual love of boxing. It's fun! You'll love it!

We'll be back next week with fresh designs, a new podcast episode, and in case you missed it in Tuesday's email, we'll be a LOT closer to the drawing of this month's giveaway winner! If you'd like a chance to win, go enter here!
