Happy January 11th! If you're reading this and happen to be Mary J. Blige, happy birthday! We hope that it's a drama-free* day filled with cake and vocal gymnastics.

*I really hope you 90s R&B kids got a lame chuckle out of that. I did.

If you're not having a drama-free day...maybe you're "celebrating" the January 11th, 1693 eruption of Mt. Etna that killed 60,000 Sicilians. You know what they say: leave the volcanic ashes; take the cannoli. (Nobody says that.)

But enough about January 11th! Do you know what happened on January 9th?

We do! This week's guest on The Boredwalk Podcast was sworn in as the first openly LGBTQ member of Nebraska's state legislature!

This week we chat with Nebraska state senator Megan Hunt about her recent election, her goals for representing the fine people of Nebraska's 8th district during her term, how to get things done in a polarized political climate, her transition from activist to politician, balancing her new duties as an elected official with her day job(s) as a small business owner and single mom, and her tips for running for public office in your neck of the woods! Plus we got to learn all about Nebraska's unique legislative process. Sweet!

New Year's resolutions that don't suck? It really is possible!

Well gang, here we are: 2019. One year away from the completion of SeaLab! I'm sure it will be right on time, just like jetpacks and (real) hoverboards.

While we wait to be disappointed by Science's failure to reach next year's futurism milestone, there are other important things we could be doing. Like eating more fruits & veggies!

This week on the podcast we're joined by Emilie Hebert of the popular food blog Emilie Eats. Emilie is currently in school pursuing her Masters degree to become a nutritionist, but that doesn't stop her from creating delectable and gorgeous-looking plant-based recipes and sharing them with the world. We talk to Emilie about her food background, from her upbringing in Louisiana to her current home in Colorado, the differences between a plant-based diet and a vegan diet, how making healthier food choices is easier than you think — including some great tips that you can put into practice right now with minimal effort for maximum flavor — and what her long-term plans are for her career and her blog. We also discuss the ups and downs of having an activist mindset in the modern age, and deal with some comments from the furry peanut gallery courtesy of some mournful background wails from Oliver. As for new stuff, Meredith is still working on adding our next product type. I'm in the midst of a very finely-detailed design that's taking a bit longer than usual, but it's looking pretty sweet if I do say so myself. Well, here it is — the end of 2018. We made it, guys! Another circuit around that flaming sphere of death, trudging inexorably closer to our inevitable demise as our flesh prisons slowly decay. Isn't it magical?! We certainly think so.

In all seriousness, we do hope you've all had a wonderful holiday season. It can be tough to remain optimistic when it's cold outside and the warmest thing about most family gatherings is whatever you've got hidden in your flask.

It's especially difficult when you're confronted daily with the reality that little kids are dying in ICE custody away from their parents and that the leathery, persimmon-colored sub-creature responsible for it is turning a visit to the troops overseas into a weird, gross, fascistic campaign event...but you know. America first.🙄

If you or a family member are a "non-essential" government employee who's been affected by the shutdown, please know that you are 100% essential in our book. Feel free to contact your congressional representative and ask them to support Bill Foster's new legislation to retroactively pay those affected and put an end to congressional perks during federal shutdowns. Seems reasonable to us, but what do we know? We just design & print t-shirts an' stuff.

OK, time to dismount this soapbox. *Leaps, sticks the landing, wins the gold*

Matt's taking a luxury week and hasn't completed a single new design in almost seven days. He'll be back at it this weekend and next week, provided he can stop being softer than a heap of mashed potatoes for a minute. (Mmmm...delicious!)
