Independence Day is just around the corner here in the U.S., and we thought "you know who doesn't get nearly the recognition she deserves compared to other Founders? Betsy Ross."

So with that in mind, we did a little digging and discovered what an important role this O.G. #GirlBoss and all-around #NastyWoman played in the establishment of our country. Check out some cool facts about Ms. Ross below!

1. Betsy was the 8th of SEVENTEEN children! However, "only" nine of them survived childhood.

2. Betsy met her first husband, John Ross, while working as an upholstery apprentice under Ross's uncle, who would become one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

3. Betsy and John eloped when Betsy was 21, causing a rift with her family and her expulsion from the Quaker congregation she belonged to. Betsy and John started their own upholstery business and joined the same church where George Washington was a congregant.

4. When John was killed in the Revolutionary War, Betsy continued to run their upholstery business on her own. It is also suspected that Ms. Ross used her feminine wiles to distract Hessian commander Carl von Donop after the Battle of Iron Works Hill, thus keeping his forces out of the "turning of the tide" Battle of Trenton in December of 1776.

So not only was Ms. Ross a successful business owner in her own right, but also something of a looker. Brains AND beauty — what a package!

5. There is some debate among historians over whether or not Betsy Ross actually created the first U.S. flag as is popularly assumed. Historians cannot decisively prove or disprove this story, which gained popularity around 1876. Betsy's grandson William Canby presented a research paper to the  Historical Society of Pennsylvania in which he claimed that his grandmother had "made with her hands the first flag" of the United States. Mr. Canby said he first obtained this information from his aunt Clarissa Sydney (Claypoole) Wilson in 1857, twenty years after Betsy Ross's death.
