Happy National Hugging Day, I guess. If you are a hugger and you've got huggers in your life, more power to you — get those squeezes! My dream is for a world where huggers and non-huggers can peacefully co-exist. As you probably guessed, I am in the latter camp. That leaves me with the unsavory options of awkwardly cringing through hugs I don't want or hurting someone's feelings.

Having spent my life as a cactus (apparently trying to pass as human — with varying results), I've always felt like I don't quite fit in. Despite more recent marketing gimmicks championing "being yourself," we live in a society that really only wants us all to be one way, and that way is affectionate, warm, upbeat, and sunny. Over the years I've tried to smash my prickly square peg into that culturally acceptable round hole, but we are who we are. As I've gotten older I've moved on from "self-improvement" and focused on self-acceptance. I'm a cactus, no apologies. If you're a fellow cactus, you're not the only one. Shine on, you sassy succulent!

What I'm like to hug... probably.

Today is also International Sweatpants Day — finally something we can all get on board with. I think? Cue emails from the leggings-aren't-pants crowd chastising me for giving sweats a shout out.

She might be best known for Beetlejuice and Thelma and Louise, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for her work in 80s cult comedy gem Earth Girls Are Easy, featuring co-stars Julie Brown, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans, and Jim Carrey. We should all be so lucky as to have hunky aliens beaming us off this nightmare planet.
