Space Nerds, Are You Ready For the Perseid Meteor Shower?

Perseid Meteor Shower

Summer may be famous for Independence Day fireworks, but we prefer an altogether different light show, courtesy of the cosmos. Every summer you can catch this spacey show in the Northern Hemisphere — if you make a point to travel away from the city.

This year, the best days for viewing the Perseid meteor shower are August 11-13. We're telling you now so you can make your get-out-of-town plans! Whether you plan to drive up to a mountain top for an evening picnic or take a weekend camping trip, seeking dark skies without light pollution will ensure the best view of this meteor shower.

Cool things to know about the Perseid meteor shower:

  • The Perseids are one of the brightest and most prolific meteor showers of the year — they can produce up to 150 meteors per hour!

  • The meteors will come from the direction of the constellation Perseus, but should be visible across the night time sky.

  • The best time to see the Perseids is between midnight and dawn, so make sure you have some coffee handy!

  • If you live in a major city, here are some places you might be able to get a good view of the meteor shower.

Need a new look for this special occasion? Here's a few of our favorite space themed shirts that we can't wait to wear for Perseid weekend!

We'll be heading out to the desert near Joshua Tree National Park that weekend for the celestial light show and will hopefully be able to share some fun pix of the experience with you fantastic folks the following week. If any of you plan on stargazing at the same time as we are, be sure to let us know in the comments or over on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and share some spacey photos of your own!

That's it from us until next week! Until then,

Peace, love, and shooting stars,
