Don't forget to write! ✍️
I know we tend to think of letters as a relic of the past, but this is kind of a letter, minus the dead trees! (Or maybe with dead trees, since you can't read this letter without electricity, and all this energy use is also problematic, so maybe I should get off my high horse about saving trees.)
👹 He's making a list, and checking it indiscriminately.
Tomorrow is the Feast of Saint Nicholas, but tonight is all about everyone's favorite German child-punishing spirit. Merry Krampusnacht!
Fittingly, today is also National Communicate With Your Kids Day. Here's an idea: communicate to them that if they misbehave this holiday season, Krampus is coming to whisk them all to Hell (or his belly, depending on how peckish he feels). It's enough to scare the dungarees* off even the bravest young whippersnapper! (Today is also National Blue Jeans Day.)
☃️ Got the winter blues?
It's certainly fitting that today is National Bartender Day since nothing will make you feel like drinking like it being cold at dark by 4pm every day.
I know I'm getting off easy living in Southern California, where our version of "cold" is 50 degrees, but to me it still feels frigid because I am a weather wimp. Plus, who am I to shy away from airing grievances? Do I really want to risk my own special place in Hell?
😩 Have holiday gatherings already wiped you out?
Did you know that today is National Personal Space Day? True story!
Fitting that it falls right in the middle of the holiday season, with its customary barrage of obligatory familial and professional "parties," full of close-talking conspiracy theorist relatives and inappropriately confessional co-workers.
This is it! Last call for Cyber Monday savings! 🤑
It may interest you to find out that the REAL reason for the season (or at least November 28th) is to celebrate National French Toast Day. Huzzah!
☕ If you already tried turning it off and on again...
I am not much of a morning person, so even after a night of off-mode, I'm usually like a wind up toy with a dying battery. Thankfully there's coffee, and today is National Espresso Day, so a perfect excuse to add some pep to your step!
📺 Stay tuned...
Let's be real: pretty much EVERY day for the last several decades has been World Television Day, but sure, why not honor the tube further? It got us through the pandemic, after all. You can only walk around the same neighborhood nodding at the parade of masked faces doing the same so many times!
Feeling salty? 🍟
I don't eat fast food often, since I already have lots of other reasons to hate myself without adding partially hydrogenated vegetable oil to the mix, but every once in a while I do get a hankering for it. My traditional go-to vice is fries, but since becoming a Californian, tacos have taken the number 1 spot in my heart.
❄️ Holiday season already driving you nuts? 😵
If inter-planetary travel isn't in the cards this week, you can at least amuse yourself with our 2022 winter holiday gift guide. It's full of suggestions more attainable than the over-priced crockery being pushed by Williams Sonoma, and even spicier than the guac you should be enjoying today in honor of National Spicy Guacamole Day.
Karma's a relaxing thought 😍
It's National Sundae Day, but there is one thing sweeter than all the desserts, dear reader, and that is comeuppance. Our new design up top is a nod to that most beloved of chilled treats!
Isn't it chaotic (don't you think)? 😵
Happy National Scrapple Day!
Just kidding; scrapple is disgusting in both concept and reality! Yet Big Scrapple managed to pull enough strings to give itself its own official random holiday, and since it happens to fall immediately after Election Day, it seems fitting.
Schedule all booked up? 📚
The National Book Award was established in 1936 by the American Booksellers Association (A.B.A.). The industry put a pause on the tradition during World War II, but resumed in 1950. Nowadays the award is presented to one book (author) each year in the following categories: fiction, documentary, poetry, translation, and youth literature.
