Do you smell what 2022 is cooking? 🔥

January 07, 2022

Happy National Pass Gas Day! I hope that, regardless of what you have planned today, you fart proudly if the urge strikes. It's what Founding Creep Benjamin Franklin would have wanted.

This day is for the birds 😒

January 05, 2022

Look, I don't mean to tell a calendar its business, but National Bird Day? Hitchcock tried to give birds an entire film once and we all know how that turned out, so let's tread carefully...

🍒 Feeling cherry-table in the New Year? Find out why inside!

January 03, 2022

Happy National Chocolate-Covered Cherry Day! Cherry cordials used to be my mom's favorite sweet treat; they may still be, but I haven't shared a roof with her in many (many, many) years, so who knows? Maybe some upstart confection has unseated the champ since I've left the nest? We may never know!

🍾 It's the last day of the year. How we gonna kick it? 🥂

December 31, 2021

Well, here we are — the end. We did it! It's been a bumpy ride, but we made it through 2021. Pat yourself on the back and try to forget the fact that time is a illusory human construct and next year won't magically be one iota better simply because we replace that 1 with a 2 tomorrow. Don't despair, though! Reality is for the harsh light of January 1st. December 31st is all about unfounded and delusional optimism about the next 365 days!

The best way to ward off winter chill? 🥶

PIPING HOT PEPPER POT, APPARENTLY

Happy National...Pepper Pot Day? No, today is not a day celebrating Tony "Iron Man" Stark's fictitious executive assistant Virginia "Pepper" Potts — rather, today is all about the spicy soup made of (blecch) beef tripe, veggies, and copious quantities of peppercorns. Duh.

While I'm sure pepper pot has its modern devotees, it's telling that even Campbell's decided to discontinue their take on this "classic" in 2010 after selling it since 1899. I guess beef tripe-based soup is a very 20th century foodstuff. Maybe some historic soup buff will orchestrate a comeback for it. What say you, Soup Nazi?

Oof, tough crowd!

I think the main takeaway here is that after Hanukkah, Saturnalia, Yule, Kwanzaa, et al, December feels well within its rights to phone it in the rest of the month.

Speaking of stuff being discontinued, Boredwalk is getting in on that action, too.

This coming weekend we'll be discontinuing a few hundred designs to make room for new art coming your way in 2022! It's always sad to have to say bye-bye to designs, but the stuff we're removing from our website either isn't a strong seller or doesn't really fit the Boredwalk aesthetic anymore. Chances are most, if not all, of the designs in question will not be missed and their absence will go unnoticed. If anything, it'll make the site easier to navigate with less fluff to sort through!

The other thing we're discontinuing this weekend that probably will be noticed (and definitely missed) are our current prices. I'll share a bit more about that in Friday's email, but thought it was important enough to mention it here, too, while we're discussing discontinuation of things.

Moving on, let's discuss happier things, like notable December 29th birthdays!

• Actors Mary Tyler Moore (1936), Ted Danson (1947), Patricia Clarkson (1959), Jude Law (1972), Katherine Moennig (1977), and Alison Brie (1982)

• The great state of Texas, admitted as the 28th state in the Union on this day in 1845!

Now let's get to some amusing links!

1. A dapper tweeting llama recaps 2021

I mean, not a REAL llama, but Twitter user @LlamaInATux kept tabs on all the topics that dominated their particular feed throughout the year and has listed those topics in one place — the thread linked above — for posterity. Turns out a lot of crazy sh!t happened this year!

2. A red panda spends 45 seconds wildin' out in the snow

My promise to you, dear reader: to never miss an opportunity to share videos of adorable red pandas doing adorable red panda things.

3. Tanbo is the art form I didn't know I was missing from my life

Tanbo, or rice paddy art, is a community-organized living art project in rice-growing regions in Japan. The designs are made by planting different varieties of rice that grow in varying colors. The level of detail in some of these is stunning!

4. Holiday shrubs 32 ways

Cartoonist John Atkinson, who can be found on Instagram @wrong.hands, recently shared his take on how famous artists throughout history likely viewed celebratory conifers. Apparently his first 16-tree roundup wasn't comprehensive enough, as he just added a second volume.

5. Salmon, but make it inedible and interlocking

What is it about stop motion Lego videos that is so mesmerizing? We may never know.

OK! Hopefully these little diversions helped to brighten your day! We'll be back here in your inbox on Friday with more entertainment and Boredwalk news! Until then...

Peace, love, and spicy soup,

Matt

😰 When you look at your 2022 to-do list while it's still 2021:

December 27, 2021

Happy National Fruitcake Day! Speaking of epidemics, has anyone tried chucking a fruitcake at Covid yet? They're dense, solid, and chock full of vitamin-rich fruit, which supposedly is good for immune health. Maybe we've all been trudging around getting jabbed in the arm like a bunch of chumps for the last 12 months for no good reason?*

Happy — or at least tolerable — holidays from Boredwalk HQ! 🎁

December 24, 2021

It's been a whirlwind year here at Boredwalk HQ, and in lieu of our regular email format our co-founder Meredith thought it might be fun to structure this missive like a family holiday letter updating you on all the things that have transpired in Boredwalkland over the course of 2021. What follows are the fruits of that directive!

Just out of my reach 🥺

December 22, 2021

Happy National Short Person Day! Like all the other inconsequential occasions we riff on in our emails, this is a new one for me, despite having spent my life unable to reach a damn thing in my kitchen or on store shelves. I married tall for a reason, folks, though it does mean we can't see eye to eye unless I'm standing on something.

Mulling things over this week...🤔

December 20, 2021

Happy National Sangria Day! Apparently Big Sangria really wants you to know that it's not just for warm weather months, and that it's perfectly acceptable to heat sangria up as an alternative to mulled wine during the holiday season. Which sounds delicious! But also a little bit like an endorsement of braising fruit in its own blood. Mmm...bloodwine...

Well that didn't go as planned...😖

December 16, 2021

We are just one week out from the last day for UPS, FedEx, and USPS to deliver holiday goodies in time for Christmas — though if you celebrate Yule and/or Kwanzaa you still have a few more days of wiggle room — and while everyone is doing their best to make delivery dates happen, we all know how the best laid plans tend to go (straight into a flaming dumpster).

These cats aren't gonna herd themselves! 😾

December 15, 2021

Happy Cat Herders Day! Today's occasion recognizes those whose life or job is "like herding cats." Incidentally, my life AND my job are like herding cats! I spend my days wrangling suppliers, technology, an ever growing team, and my evenings trying to herd my actual cat who is as slobby and unruly as he is adorable.

Getting antsy for your holiday gifts to arrive? 😬

December 13, 2021

And so it begins. We're thirteen days out from the day when real and fake trees alike inexplicably sprout inside of domiciles and start pooping presents, and already our inbox is crammed with frantic emails from procrastinators begging us to bend space/time and teleport stuff around the globe because a fixed date on the calendar somehow snuck up on them (again).
